This is a special season for a number of parents. It is graduation time. All the hard work of moms and dads across the nation are about to bear fruit, good fruit, in the form of a diploma or degree. Many parents will wonder what their baby boy or girl will do next. Will they succeed in college as they leave home and step into the world of independence? Will they find a job that will make use of their degree? The most important questions is, will my child reverence God enough to seek His will for their lives? How many parents prepare our children to pursue such wisdom?
The Word says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” It is God’s desire that we teach our children to seek wisdom from Him as to what they should do with their lives. For it is God and God alone who knows the plan He has for each of us, plans to prospers us and not to harm us. He has plans to give us hope and a future. No eye has seen, not ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him. We are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God has already planned in advance for us to do.
What a waste it would be for our children to spend their whole lives pursuing their “dreams” without fulfilling God’s purpose for their lives. Everything done outside the will of God is vanity, a chasing after the wind. At the end of the pursuit, you have nothing. What a joy it would be to cap off the graduation celebration with a commitment from our children that they will seek the will of God and be all that He has called for them to be.
