Don't Settle For What You Get If It Is Not What You Asked

How many times have we settled for whatever our children do even though it's not what we've asked? We ask them to wash the dishes and empty the trash. They wash the dishes and we settle. We tell them no games or TV before homework. They attempt their homework late that night AFTER their favorite show and we settle. We encourage them to read their Bible regularly. They take their Bible to church on Sunday and we settle. We expect them to bring home A's, B's and maybe a C. They bring home D's or F's and we settle. Why do we settle? Is it fear that we are not going to get anything? Is it a lack of faith? All we are doing is short-changing our children from reaching their full potential.

There's a story in the Bible about a blind man who was brought to Jesus. Jesus spat on the man's eyes and put His hands on the man and ask if he saw anything. The man said he saw men like trees walking around. At that time, the man could have settled for partial sight/blindness. AT LEAST he could almost see clearly. But when the man came to Jesus, he knew Jesus was able to make him whole. So he waited for what he asked. Jesus put His hand on the man's eyes again and the man saw everyone clearly. (Mark 8:22-26)

When we lower our expectations to meet what we get, we do ourselves and our children a disservice. Sometimes we get tired of telling our children over and over again what we expect of them and cop the "I don't care anymore" attitude. Unfortunately, many of our children are not living a life of mediocrity because we have settled. Don't settle for what you get if it is not what you asked.

That the next generation will know God...
